Mental Well-Being

According to the Mental Health Foundation, mental
well-being is characterised by a person’s ability to fulfil
certain key functions and activities.  This includes the
ability to:

Ÿ
Learn
Ÿ
Feel, express and manage a range of positive
           and negative emotions
Ÿ
Form and maintain good relationships with
           others
Ÿ
Cope with and manage change and uncertainty

Mental well-being is about valuing and accepting
yourself, caring for yourself, and looking after your
physical health, amongst other things.

Having good mental health can mean that we feel
balanced and confident in our daily lives however we
often fluctuate in terms of how well or unwell we feel so
it isn’t necessarily a fixed feeling.

When you are feeling low, it can be hard to cope with the
daily demands of life, you may feel alone and find your
relationships are difficult to maintain.  When you feel
better emotionally you tend to be able to deal with things
well, even when you are faced with problems, you would
feel confident and able to maintain strong relationships
with those around you.

What can I do to feel good?

We always have times where we feel low however we
must make sure that we don’t stay that way for too long.
If you aren’t feeling too good then you can give us a call
during our service hours to talk about it.  The people
around you can also help to make you feel better and
listen you.  You can also do a number of things to change
your state of mind and help bring you back into that
confident and positive state:

Ÿ
Spend time with friends and family who make
           you feel good
Ÿ
Relax!  Make sure you give yourself some
           “Me” time
Ÿ
Get plenty of sleep - research has shown that
the amount of sleep you get directly impacts
           your emotions during the day
Ÿ
Have a healthy and balanced diet
Ÿ
Exercise 4-5 times a week for 30 minutes at a
           time at least
Ÿ
Get some fresh air - combine this with your
exercise needs by taking a walk in a green area

Remember, you can call us during our service hours
when you want to be heard.
